Before you click ‘add to cart,’ you might be wondering: What is paleo? Don’t worry, if you’re interested in foods that are gluten free, dairy free, minimally processed, you’re already more than halfway there.
What is the paleo diet?
Simply put, a paleo diet represents a nutrition philosophy based on what we believe our ancestors ate. Also called the ‘caveman diet,’ paleo eaters focus on unprocessed, grass-fed meat, poultry, fish, vegetables, fruits, and nuts. The paleo approach also seeks to prioritize anti-inflammatory foods that help with digestion, mood, and energy. Some take these parameters a step further to accommodate pre-existing conditions or lifestyle needs and minimize their exposure to salt, coffee, and alcohol.
The thought process behind adopting a paleo diet is the belief that the human body has not truly evolved to consume and digest our modern diet. In other words, the industrial revolution, which allowed for mass production and processed foods, occurred only a few minutes ago in the timeline of human existence. As a result, some believe that our bodies haven’t yet adapted to adequately digest these types of foods. While the research around this has shown mixed results, most people can agree that minimizing processed foods is beneficial to your health.
What is our approach?
At Paleo & Co., we believe individuals should do what’s best for their body before subscribing to a one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition. For us, the paleo diet is appealing for its emphasis on whole foods and flexibility for people with different dietary restrictions. Whether you’re lactose intolerant or gluten avoidant, the paleo diet can work for you. Also, cutting out processed foods and sugar is a great way to start getting healthier, and to learn more about what foods work best for your body. Not to mention, the ability to search for paleo products, recipes, or brands can be a simple way to ensure you’re fueling up with digestion friendly foods - whatever your goals may be. Even those following the keto diet or Whole30 guidelines can often enjoy paleo food products.
You may have noticed that earlier in this blog post we said the paleo diet minimizes processed or packaged foods. That’s true! In an ideal world, we would all meal prep on Sundays, eliminate any packaged foods in our cabinets, and shop only organic, all the time.
But sometimes, life gets in the way. We understand that there will be times when you’re busy, stressed, or just sick of the status quo - That’s where we come in.
